Peacehaven is a mainly residential area. Shopping revolves around
the Meridian Center, Mecca of the modern consumer!

The Meridian Monument marks the point where the
0-degrees Meridian Line departs from its native British shores. Were today's
residents to gather there to greet the new Millenium in the spirit of Peacehaven's
founders? This author doubted it, and Lo!- Nothing happened. Still, it has since
been mooted as a suitable community spot for future celebrations. Right, right,
right... |

If there is a "High Street" then it is a stretch of the
South Coast Road near the Meridian Monument, where post offices and banks
have made their home since Peacehaven's birth. The increased traffic on
the road spoils its charm, however. The puny industrial estate is best
left unmentioned.
There are less than half-a-dozen public houses, one or two
hotels, and a few guest-houses. For eats, you'll have to go to the pub,
the chippy or the takeaway. Amenities such as doctors and dentists are
quiet, so Peacehaven is a respite from hectic Sussex life in some ways.
Surprisingly, Peacehaven's community (and Telscombe's) sprang
into NIMBY-style action recently, with all the ferocity of the
1987 hurricane when Southern Water announced plans for another raw sewage
treatment works within yards of peoples' homes. A triumph for the little
people; the evil company's money-grabbing fatcats look like being defeated.
Well done everyone!
"These giant pencils will save the council a fortune
in sign-writing expenses!"... Ever willing to stand up for the common
man, or woman, of Peacehaven, the picture above shows Our Esteemed Town
Councillors, planning, no doubt, another strongly worded letter to the
chairman of Southern Water. From left to right, Councillors Sue Griffiths,
Reigna Mitchell, Terri
Fearn and Jan Marshall. Thanks for this insightful photo chaps!

Who said the dream was dead? Peacehaven's Meridian Centre was
built in 1978 and is a quietly amusing shopping centre with a "Gone With
The Wind" soundtrack. |
